Without Quite Knowing is a research project bifurcating in two outputs: an ever-growing archive and a live-performance work.
-The archive is constituted of 10 elements -pamphlets binding the history of the work, yet impermanently tied together-
-The live-performance work is the manifestation of some of the elements that constitute the archive, tied through a composition.
The operations in this project consist in: generation of material through and across different mediums; composition; multimediality; accumulation; distillation.
The steps involved are: creation of movement/thought tasks; arranging of material through categories; performance and recording of material through audio, video, photo, writing; feedback; sharing.
The processes and outputs are being observed through experiments which information is obtained with: questionnaires; GSR sensor data; observation of audience behaviour.
Without Quite Knowing looks at change, uncertainty and instability through performance as a means to explore and share states of vulnerability, as a prelude to intimacy with an audience, which may be a prelude itself to social bonding. I focus this piece on the notion of transliteration: how content can change form and be translated across mediums maintaining consistency and being enriched by its metamorphing. Both live and documentation aspects of this work revolve around a dialogue between physical and psychological experiences of both artists and spectator. |
THE PROJECT ORIGINATED IN MY INTEREST IN THE IDEA OF A LOOP CONSISTING OF ELEMENTS OF MOVEMENT, WORD, IMAGE, AND EXPERIENCE THROUGH A METHODOLOGY BASED ON WHAT I CALL OF ACCOUNTABLE TEMPORARY EXPEDIENT*.
I FOCUS THIS EXPLORATION ON TRANSLATION FROM A MEDIUM TO ANOTHER OF ELEMENTS THAT ARE GENERATED BY PERFORMING AND ARE FED BACK INTO THE PERFORMANCE.
*AN ACCOUNTABLE TEMPORARY EXPEDIENT (ATE) IS WHAT IS A TASK THAT IS DESIGNED TO RESPOND TO A CHOREOGRAPHIC SITUATION, BUT IS ONLY TEMPORARILY VALID AND IS DOES NOT APPLY TO ALL CIRCUMSTANCES—ACCOUNTABLE MEANS CONSIDERATE OF THE CONSEQUENCES IT WILL HAVE ON THE CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCE (IN A PERFORMANCE SETTING); TEMPORARY STANDS FOR NOT APPLICABLE IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES AT ALL TIMES (DISPOSABLE OR CASE SENSITIVE); EXPEDIENT IMPLIES THAT IT IS PRACTICALLY USEFUL IN A SITUATION OF ACTION.
